Small plane lands on Bay Area highway during rush hour

A single-engine plane was forced to make an emergency landing on a Bay Area highway during rush hour when it ran out of fuel.

The incident occurred just after 07:00 local time on November 4, 2024. According to the California Highway Patrol, the CubCrafters CC11-160 aircraft landed on southbound Highway 85.

The plane, piloted by the only passenger, managed to land without hitting any vehicles or harming anyone.

The pilot of the plane, identified as Peterson Conway, told news outlet ABC7 that he ran out of fuel and lost the engine during the flight. Conway then made a distress call to Palo Alto Airport (PAO), where he was heading.

Before leaving Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, Conway had asked employees at Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) to refuel the plane before takeoff, but there appeared to be a miscommunication, according to Conway.

“I left my farm in Carmel at 6 o’clock this morning, I called the airport and asked them to let me know, we don’t know what happened or if it happened, but it’s clear my engine is dead.” Conway told ABC7.
