Attacked police and firefighters with fireworks

Three teenagers have been arrested after fireworks were thrown at police and firefighters during Bonfire Night in Manchester.

At 16:15 GMT on Tuesday a large group of people were reported to have thrown fireworks and missiles into Vine Street, Gorton.

Supt Richard McNamara said three men, aged between 16 and 18, were arrested on suspicion of causing violent disorder and were detained for questioning, with further arrests to follow.

“It is shocking to see fireworks being used as a weapon against emergency services trying to keep our communities safe,” he said.

“Fortunately no injuries were reported to us and I am also pleased to say that although the fireworks were aimed at our officers, no officers were injured.”

Supt McNamara said officers were carrying out a number of investigations “which will ensure all those responsible are brought to justice”.

He added that the force had been working with others in the area throughout the evening, commissioning joint patrols with youth services and Manchester Fire Brigade.
