GP community safety committee visits crime-ridden Soshanguve

This was according to station commander Brigadier Govender, who presented the latest crime report to the Gauteng Legislative Assembly’s portfolio committee on community safety in Jukulyn and surrounding areas on Thursday afternoon.

The portfolio committee held a public meeting in the area, which has been the scene of high-profile murder cases.

Earlier this year, community members complained about services at the station, accusing police officers of corruption and the slow pace of investigations.

The governor explained the situation of people at the station, including 99 cases of rape.

“There are 197 murder investigations ongoing, two were in court, one was found guilty, zero was not guilty and zero were withdrawn. Six of them were closed because they could not be detected. 39 of the house robberies are being investigated, two of them are being referred to the courthouse. Two of them were withdrawn, and 14 were closed because they could not be detected.

“Rape; “99 files are being investigated, 19 were given to the court, 1 was found guilty, 15 were withdrawn, and 15 were closed without being detected.”

The police station recorded a 35% increase in contact crimes between April and June compared to the same period last year.

The station serves the notorious Jukulyn district in Tshwane’s north, which hit the headlines at the start of the year after four people, including a teenager and an off-duty police officer, were killed on New Year’s Day.

“There was a 34.7% increase in contact crimes, with the biggest contributors being assault GBH, common assault and total common robbery,” said Brigadier Govender.

“Contact related crimes; There was an increase of 51.4 percent and a difference of 18 cases compared to the previous year. “Many were linked to domestic violence, including assaults.”
