SINGAPORE – A 25-year-old Singaporean student died after being stabbed in the stomach in Brussels city center on November 7.

According to the statement made by the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office on the same day, the victim was taken to hospital and died there.

According to local news, Brussels police received a call for help from Sint-Pietersstraat street in the Belgian capital at 2.30am local time.

After house searches, Brussels police identified and detained two 18-year-old men.

“Preliminary elements of the investigation indicate that two suspects approached the victim and the argument resulted in a stabbing,” said Yasmina Vanoverschelde, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.

According to Brussels media outlet Bruzz, the victim was with two students in the city center that evening when two strangers harassed the group.

The trio then went to Sint-Pietersstraat.

When the victim was alone, two suspects approached him and one of them allegedly pulled out a knife.

The police provided first aid to the injured until medical teams arrived.

A police cordon was established at the scene.

The police also informed the judge at the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office, who requested an investigative judge visit the scene.

The Brussels prosecutor said that at this stage of the investigation the exact circumstances of the incident have not yet been clarified.

The Singapore Embassy in Brussels is providing consular assistance to the victim’s family and is in contact with authorities in Belgium, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on November 8.

“MFA offers its deepest condolences to the grieving family,” the statement said.
