Hyderabad:The Telangana High Court has warned social media platforms, individuals, video producers, media agencies and the general public against unauthorized use or sharing of livestreamed videos of court proceedings.

On the directions of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, the administrative wing of the Supreme Court issued a circular regarding illegal use of hearing records. Supreme Court Registrar G. Praveen Kumar spoke about the legal ramifications that follow the authorized use of livestreamed videos of court proceedings.

According to the guidelines and rules regarding court proceedings regarding live broadcast, “no person/institution other than the authorized person/institution (including print and electronic media and social media platforms) may record, share and/or disseminate live broadcast hearings.” or archive data. This provision also applies to all messaging applications.”

“Any person/entity who violates this provision will be prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the guideline said. “The court shall have exclusive copyright of the records and archival data. “Unauthorized use of live streaming will be punishable as an offense under the Indian Copyright Act, 1957, Information Technology Act, 2000 and other provisions of law including the Contempt Act.”

According to the rules, “The live broadcast may not be reproduced, transmitted, uploaded, posted, modified, broadcast or rebroadcast in any way without the prior written permission of the court.”
