Nanny, accomplice in double murder, called employer ‘her husband’ in police footage

Juliana Peres Magalhäes, the nanny of a suburban Virginia family who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a double murder case last month, can be seen hyperventilating in new police body camera footage. Fairfax County Police Department.

Magalhaes, a Brazilian citizen, was apparently in love with her employer, former IRS agent Brendan Banfield, and the two were accused of staging a wedding. Complex plot to murder Banfield’s wife Christine Banfield, mother of 4-year-old daughter, in February 2023.

A man named Joe Ryan was also killed as part of the alleged plot after prosecutors said he was contacted through a sexual fetish website and lured to the Banfields’ home with the promise of sex.

In the video from February 2023, Magalhãoes can be heard telling police that her “husband” was downstairs.

“He started stabbing him,” Magalhãoes told police in the video, referring to Ryan. “I think Brendan shot him and he asked me for help shooting him. … I’ve never seen him before.”

He was 22 when police first arrested him in October 2023. Eight months after the murders when authorities charged him with felony murder and use of a weapon in the commission of a felony.

He had moved into the master bedroom at the time of his arrest. The Banfields’ house in Herndon, According to authorities, there is a photo of her and Brendan together on the nightstand next to the bed.

Fairfax County Police arrested Banfield, a 39-year-old IRS employee, in September, more than a year after the murders. He is indicted on four counts. aggravated murder and use of a weapon in the commission of a crime.

According to FOX 5, Banfield faces life in prison for the alleged crimes, while Magalhäes faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

When police responded to a 911 call from the Banfield residence on Feb. 24, 2023, they found Christine stabbed in the neck and Ryan suffering from fatal gunshot wounds in the home’s upstairs bedroom. Authorities took Christine to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Authorities seized a knife and two guns from the home.

It remains unclear exactly what happened at the house that Friday morning, but both Magalhâes and Brendan apparently admitted to shooting Ryan while the man held a knife to Christine.

Juliana’s stepmother, Viviane Magalhãoes, told the Associated Press that she hopes her stepdaughter can return home to Brazil soon.

“We still haven’t figured this out. I believe she was deceived by this man. He brainwashed her,” Viviane Magalhäes told the AP in Portuguese, referring to Banfield. “She was never a gold digger in Brazil. She dated a modest man like herself for many years. We never thought she would encounter such a situation.”

Banfield no longer works for the IRS.
