Bangladesh cracks down on Donald Trump supporters after condemning violence against Hindus, minorities

Security forces in Bangladesh launched a crackdown on supporters of US President-elect Donald Trump, canceling a celebratory rally just days later. Condemned “barbaric violence” against Hindus and other minorities in the country.

According to reports, on Friday evening, large numbers of people who gathered in Dhaka and other cities to celebrate Trump’s decisive victory in the US elections were met with swift action by the authorities, preventing them from holding their planned victory parades.

India Today has accessed videos showing police seizing banners and posters congratulating Trump. Some banners read: “Dear President Donald Trump, love from Bangladesh.”

Later, the Bangladeshi army and police carried out late night raids and arrested many people for their open support of the future president of the United States. India Today has learned that the detained persons had no political affiliation and were ordinary civilians.

The support for Trump in Bangladesh follows his recent comments on X (formerly Twitter), in which he condemned attacks on Hindus and other minority groups in the country, especially after the recent political upheaval with the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

“I strongly condemn the barbaric violence against Hindus, Christians and other minorities, who have been attacked and looted by mobs in Bangladesh, which remains in complete chaos. “This would never have happened on my watch,” Trump wrote.

Meanwhile, in the days leading up to the crackdown, the Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government said: Muhammed Yunus sent a congratulatory message to Trump expressed hopes for bilateral cooperation.

In his letter, Yunus underlined Bangladesh’s commitment to peace and inclusion and responded tactfully to Trump’s remarks about brutality against minorities.

“Your Excellency, in keeping with our commitment to a peaceful and inclusive society, the government and the peace-loving people of Bangladesh look forward to partnering and cooperating in your efforts to overcome global challenges in the pursuit of peace, harmony, stability and prosperity for all,” Yunus wrote .

Trump’s statement was his first public comment on the issue of targeting minorities in Bangladesh. He also vowed to strengthen the US-India partnership, citing his “good friend” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
