Converted electric bike involved in deadly Coventry fire

A house fire in Coventry that killed two people was accidental, the fire service said.

Crews responding to a fire in the Stoke Aldemoor area on Friday found the bodies of two people inside the property.

Following the investigation, West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) said the cause of the fire was a pedal bike that had been converted into an electric bike and was stored in the corridor.

The identities of the dead people have not yet been determined.

When crews were called to The Coppice shortly before 04:40 GMT they discovered a severe fire in the first floor maisonette which was affecting the entire property.

In a statement, WMFS said: “The cause of the fire was accidental and involved a pedal bike converted into an electric bike that was stored in the corridor of the property.

“Unfortunately, no further information will be released at this time about the cause or victims of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic accident.”

Four fire crews were sent to the scene, the first arriving within four minutes.

Crews donned breathing apparatus to enter the property and extinguished the fire by 05:55 GMT.

In addition to the police, the investigation was also carried out by fire investigation teams and a fire investigation dog.
