The top 3 areas with the most residential burglaries in Houston

An investigation by KPRC 2 Investigates revealed peaks in home burglaries across the city, revealed the hardest-hit neighborhoods and offered insight from law enforcement experts.

Where do the thefts occur?

The review of Houston Police Department data aimed to identify areas with the highest burglary rates. The results may surprise residents, especially since the top location is the Westside neighborhood near Westheimer.

#1. Westheimer, west side, inside Sam Houston Turnpike

This neighborhood has been identified as the most targeted neighborhood in Houston, with 184 burglaries reported since January 1, 2024. Apartment complexes, especially those with security vulnerabilities, have become a prime target for criminals.

#2. Sunnyside and surrounding neighborhoods

Located east of 288 and on both sides of the South Loop, this area recorded 142 residential burglary reports this year, making it the second-hardest-hit area. This area is home to a mix of new and old homes, as well as large government-supported housing.

#3. Southwest Houston Near Gessner and Bellfort

This area, where both Fondren and Gessner anchor near Bellfort, has had its share of troubles so far this year. This area ranks third with a large number of residents experiencing multiple burglaries, including Matt Amonds.

So far this year, 120 residential burglary calls have been made.

“Someone breaking into your home creates a kind of uneasy feeling in you, this is your safe place,” Amonds said.

Information from the Police Department

Retired Detective Greg Shelton, who spent decades with the Houston Police Department, shared his views on theft patterns.

According to Shelton, most residential burglaries typically occur between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., when most residents are away from home. He emphasized that a car in the driveway and a radio playing can deter potential thieves.

Protecting Your Home

Citizens are asked to take preventive measures to protect their homes. Shelton recommends three basic strategies:

  • Light up your property: Keeping the exterior well-lit can deter thieves.

  • Install visible security cameras: A clear security presence can deter crime. Point one of these at the street in front of your house.

  • Property perimeter security: Ensuring that gates and fences are secure and prevent unauthorized access.
