Manhattan burglary and burglary suspect captured in Marshall County

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – A man wanted in connection with a pair of business burglaries and robberies in Manhattan last week has been captured in Marshall County, authorities said.

The first incident was reported around 11:24 p.m., Nov. 7, when Riley County police officers responded to a report of a work alarm activated at Dick’s Sporting Goods in the 400 block of 3rd Place in Manhattan.

The police came to the scene upon notice and saw that the front window of the workplace was broken.

A short time later, officers responded to a report of criminal damage to property at the Wal-Mart in the 100 block of Bluemont Ave. The suspect in this case entered the business and stole shotgun shells before leaving.

During the investigation, it was determined that the suspect in the second investigation matched the description of the suspect in the earlier incident at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Officers later responded to a report of a burglary in the 1400 block of Collins Lane around 12:41 a.m. on Nov. 8.

Riley County Police say the 71-year-old victim stole the car, cellphone and gun of 23-year-old Andrew Franklin of Manhattan.

Officers determined that Franklin was responsible for all three incidents and requested assistance from officers and deputies with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, the Marshall County Sheriff’s office and the Marysville Police Department.

Riley County Police said Franklin abandoned the vehicle in Blue Rapids and was later located and arrested by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.

Franklin was arrested around 6:33 a.m. Nov. 8 in the 6200 block of Tuttle Creek Boulevard on charges of burglary, criminal damage to property, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

Franklin’s total bond was set at $250,000 and he remained in the Riley County Jail as of Tuesday morning.
