Maternity benefit applicants warned against fraud

According to spokesperson Teboho Thejane, the fraudsters are impersonating department officials.

He said they contacted applicants and their employers and requested payment for the release of the apparent “vouchers or funds.”

Thejane says some people have fallen victim to this scheme.

He says all the services of the ministry are free.

“Scammers often request payment via a Capitec Bank password and claim that benefits need to be processed. They obtain information by making employers believe they represent the department and asking for personal information of employees applying for these benefits.

“Customers should not share any personal financial information in response to unsolicited calls. If you receive any suspicious communications, contact the Department of Labor and Employment immediately.”
