Republicans’ terrible allegations about Matt Gaetz resurfaced after Trump announced his choice of attorney general

Allegations that Representative Matt Gaetz had sexual intercourse with underage girls resurfaced after Donald Trump announced that he would select the Florida representative as Attorney General.

Senator Markwayne Mullin criticized Gaetz earlier this year for showing pictures of girls he had ‘slept with’ to his colleagues on the floor of the US House of Representatives.

The Oklahoma Senator now tells CNN that he is confident in Trump’s decision to select Gaetz to join his cabinet.

But he warned Geatz of the questions he would face during Senate confirmation hearings.

As Republicans regain control of the Senate in the 2024 elections, Gaetz is a controversial issue even among members of his own Party.

Trump announced Wednesday that he will nominate Florida Representative Gaetz to head the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Rep. Matt Gaetz is likely to face an uphill battle to win Senate confirmation to become Donald Trump’s attorney general, given the controversy he’s had even among upper chamber Republicans

Mullin said Gaetz was “looking for fame” when he introduced the motion to vacate House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year because the media “didn’t give him any time of day” after allegations of inappropriate relationships emerged.

Gaetz says it was a lie to show women he had sexual relations with his Republican colleagues in Congress.

Following the investigation, the Florida lawmaker was never charged by the Department of Justice with sex trafficking or having sex with minors.

‘This is a man who the media did not specify the time after he was accused of sleeping with an underage girl. And there was a reason why no one at the conference came to his defense because we had all seen the videos he showed on the House floor… of the girls he was sleeping with,” Mullin told CNN earlier this year.

“He would brag about how he could crush his ED (erectile dysfunction) medication and chase it with an energy drink and stay up all night,” Mullin explained. ‘This was clearly before we got married. So when this accusation came out, no one defended him.’

“He suddenly became famous in November for opposing the Speaker of the House,” he concluded.

Gaetz is a staunchly pro-Trump lawmaker and one of the former (and now future) president’s most vocal supporters. He is a controversial name among Democrats and Republicans.

Democratic Rep. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who praised Trump for his 2025 Cabinet and some of his other picks for the White House, opposed Gaetz’s selection as Attorney General.

‘Serious, qualified people like Rubio or Stefanik have been nominated for office. Fetterman wrote that Eric Schmitt would be a solid choice for AG.

‘But Dem’s views on Gaetz aren’t that interesting,’ he continued. ‘The good ones will come from my GOP colleagues to justify the vote for that jerk.’

Fetterman’s X post stated that Republicans also have a lot of opposition to Gaetz. But we’ll see next year whether GOP members will vote in record numbers against the Trump candidacy.

“There’s no question that Matt Gaetz and I have our differences,” Mullin said after Trump’s announcement on Wednesday. ‘They made this issue very public.’

He noted: ‘I have complete confidence in President Trump’s judgment on this matter.’

“But he also needs to come to the Senate and sell himself,” Mullin countered. ‘There will be a lot of questions there. He needs to answer these questions. And hopefully he can answer the questions correctly.’

‘If he can do it, we’ll go through the approval process.’

Trump said he chose Gaetz, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, after his panel vocally criticized the agency over which he provides oversight and called for serious reforms.

“There are few issues in America more important than ending the partisan weaponization of our Justice System,” Trump wrote of Gaetz’s selection. ‘Matt will end the Armed Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations, and restore Americans’ Faith and Confidence in the badly fractured Department of Justice.’
