New Mexico man sentenced to life in prison for killing Alamogordo police officer in 2023

Found guilty of murdering a 27-year-old man New Mexico police officer He will spend the rest of his life behind bars during a traffic stop last year, according to New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

“Conviction and punishment of the person responsible for this incident senseless murder NMSP Chief Troy Weisler said the statement brought some justice but could never replace the loss of Officer Ferguson.

The incident began around 2:18 a.m. on July 15, 2023, when Alamogordo police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop for driving without lights on De La O and 9th Avenue near Puerto Rico.

Escaping from authorities, De La O crashed into a lamppost, got out of the vehicle with a shotgun and began running.

During the foot pursuit, De La O turned around and shot Ferguson in the face. He died from his injuries on July 16 at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.

De La O was shot in the leg by police as he continued to flee to a nearby house, where he was arrested.

Weisler said state police “will continue to work with all of our law enforcement partners to ensure that those who harm our officers are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”
