One person killed, car ‘completely destroyed’ in violent crash on Hume Highway north of Canberra

A car was “completely destroyed” and the Hume Highway was partially closed in a violent crash north of Canberra. One person died.

Emergency services rushed to Bowning, about 74km north of Canberra in southern New South Wales, following reports of a crash on the main highway on Friday evening.

Officers from the Hume Police District discovered a vehicle had left the road, struck a tree and burst into flames.

A passing water tanker tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire. NSW Police said the vehicle was “completely destroyed” by the flames.

While the driver died at the scene, his identity has not yet been determined.

Authorities have now established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Following the tragedy, the Hume Highway was partially closed and one southbound lane was closed.

Northbound lanes are not affected but drivers are asked to monitor Live Traffic NSW for more updates.
