Cornell Interfraternity Council cancels weekend social events due to sexual assault report

ITHACA (WBNG) — The Cornell Interfraternity Council has canceled all social events for the weekend.

IFC announced its decision in an Instagram post on Friday.

The decision to cancel events comes as the Chi Phi fraternity at Cornell University faces accusations of sexual assault and forced drug use.

“The Cornell Interfraternity Council is committed to the health and safety of all members and guests,” the IFC said. “We find all forms of sexual abuse unacceptable and strongly condemn the use of illegal substances.”

On November 11, Cornell University Police announced that they were investigating a report that a victim who was sexually assaulted by several men was forced to consume ketamine and other drugs.

Chi Phi fraternity then went dormant. Michael Azarian, Executive Director of the Chi Phi Fraternity Chapter at Cornell, told 12 News the fraternity has been temporarily suspended.

Azarian said the association will cooperate with law enforcement and the university in the investigation.

Earlier this week, the Chi Phi fraternity house on Edgemoor Lane in Ithaca opened. vandalized with eggs and graffiti during night hours. The word “rapist” was spray-painted on the pavement in front of him.

Activist group Riot Moon claimed responsibility for the vandalism.

“The fraternities were formed to reinforce white male power and perpetrate violence, harassment, and rape in our communities,” Riot Moon said. “We no longer tolerate a culture that teaches men to rape, the use of sexual violence to subjugate others, or a ‘justice system’ that constantly forces survivors to relive their trauma and leaves abusers unpunished and unshame.”

The activist group said it does not trust Cornell’s leadership or law enforcement to keep them safe.

Cornell University called the accusations “deeply disturbing.”
