Miami-Dade teen arrested in foster care and facing charges as an adult for allegedly taking revenge on mother

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A teenage boy in foster care was behind bars along with adults Friday, accused of trying to kill the man who allegedly attacked his biological mother in deep southern Miami-Dade County.

According to a police report, Guadalupe Miranda told officers that her daughter and son became angry and wanted revenge after she was the victim of a beating that left her injured.

Surveillance footage shows Miranda, 36, driving a pickup truck with her two children and her son’s girlfriend to 600 S. Krome Ave. in Homestead on Sept. 28, according to police. It shows that he arrived at The Park Motel at .

Witnesses told Homestead police officers that the gunman in the surveillance video was Miranda’s 16-year-old son, Leonel Zapet, who shot the alleged attacker in the stomach and fled.

Police officers responded to a foster home in Homestead on Sept. 29 to arrest Zapet, who had a juvenile criminal record, police said. Meanwhile, the victim, who was taken from Baptist Health Homestead Hospital to Jackson South Medical Center, was in critical condition, according to police.

Miami-Dade court records show prosecutors filed charges Wednesday in adult court against Zapet, who turned 17 on Nov. 1. Inmate records show corrections officers placed him in adult prison after the transfer Thursday. He was at the Metrowest Detention Center on Friday.

Zapet faces two felony charges as an adult: attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His hearing is scheduled for November 18 at 9 a.m. before Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Richard Hersch.
