Insider on Carson Beck’s turnover woes: Georgia QB leads FBS in interceptions in 2024 regression

Insider on Carson Beck’s turnover woes: Georgia QB leads FBS in interceptions in 2024 regression

Despite two losses, Georgia is not yet out of the playoff race. Despite the Bulldogs’ 7-2 record (which matches Georgia’s loss total over the previous three seasons), there is one glaring weakness that has marred the Bulldogs’ season so far: Carson Beck’s turnover issues.

Over half the season, Beck has thrown six more interceptions than he has in the entire 2023 season. As a result, Georgia’s offense wasn’t that productive. In the Bulldogs’ two losses to Ole Miss and Alabama, Beck had multiple turnovers.

The Dawgs have games remaining against Tennessee, UMass and Georgia Tech. If Georgia wants to make the College Football Playoff, Beck needs to resolve his turnover issues quickly.

Beck’s 12 total interceptions in the 2024 season are tied with several quarterbacks. Here’s the rest of the group:

Beck’s interceptions this season are the most by an SEC player since Matt Corral in 2020.

In fact, the 22-year-old’s performance against Ole Miss marked the fifth time in six games that he had multiple turnovers:

  • Week 5 – Alabama: Three interceptions, one turnover.
  • Week 7 – Mississippi State: Two interceptions
  • Week 8 – Texas: Three interceptions
  • Week 10 – Florida: Three interceptions
  • Week 11 – Ole Miss: One interception, one turnover.

Georgia’s final three games of the regular season will be against Tennessee, UMass and Georgia Tech. The Vols’ defense has eight interceptions this season, while UMass has four. Georgia Tech has just two interceptions this year.

Beck’s involvement in football will be critical if the Dawgs want to win against Tennessee on Saturday and stay in the College Football Playoff.

Beck entered 2024 as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. But the decline so far this season is staggering. Take a look at their numbers from last year and their 2024 stats so far:

Year Comp-Att Transition Areas Touchdowns Interventions Setter Evaluation
2023 302-417 3,941 24 6 167.9
2024 210-321 2,488 17 12 140.5

What’s wrong with Carson Beck?

While it’s difficult to pinpoint a specific reason for Beck’s struggles, Beck was forced to replace three of his favorite targets from last year because tight end Brock Bowers and receivers Ladd McConkey and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint are now in the NFL.

Georgia’s two leading receivers in 2024, Arian Smith and Dominic Lovett, have not matched the production of their predecessors. in Georgia leading the nation in falling passes.

Both of Beck’s expected targets are nowhere in the picture. Ra Ra Thomas dismissed following an arrest on multiple domestic violence charges. colbie young suspended Following his arrest early last month on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child.

Without consistent receivers, Beck seems to have trouble settling into his normal rhythm.

“He’s not the same guy,” NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay in question in his podcast with The Ringer. “I don’t know the reasoning behind it. I know the product on the field and that’s what we’re here to talk about… the product on the field shows me a quarterback who desperately misses the comfort level of Ladd McConkey and misses the security blanket of Brock Bowers.”

Another obvious glaring issue with Georgia’s offense is the lack of a consistent running game. Despite averaging 191.21 rushing yards per game last season, the Bulldogs rank an abysmal 104th in rushing yards per game in 2024. Coincidentally, Georgia is ranked between Georgia Southern (103rd) and Georgia State (105th).

Without a solid performance in attack, Beck is asked to explain much more than last season, or so it seems. Following the loss to Ole Miss, Beck expressed his frustration with Georgia’s running game.

Beck: “The important thing is not how I play, but how we play.” he told 247Sports.. “Our identity is to run the ball. We couldn’t do that tonight. Maybe when that happens, I have to step up and we need to make some explosive plays in the passing game. Or maybe I have to start shooting: Some plays are made on the field. When we can’t run the ball comfortably, someone has to step up and make a play.” .”

While some Georgia fans may perceive Beck’s comments as shifting blame to others, the Dawgs might not be facing two losses if they could run the ball more efficiently. Here’s how Georgia’s runners performed this year:

  • Trevor Etienne: 477 yards on 95 carries, seven touchdowns for an average of 59.63 yards per game
  • Nate Frazier: 333 yards on 72 carries, three touchdowns and an average of 41.63 yards per game
  • Dillon Bell: 104 yards on seven carries with one touchdown, averaging 11.56 yards per carry.
  • Brandon Robinson: 73 yards on 25 carries, three touchdowns for an average of 12.17 yards per game.

Unsurprisingly, the unit as a whole has declined in 2024. While Georgia’s offense ranks just 50th in total offense, it ranks 48th in scoring offense (30.6 ppg) this season. Last year the Bulldogs finished in the top five in both categories.

If Beck can figure out how to fix his turnover issues and help Georgia advance to the playoffs, he could regain favor with Bulldog fans. More than that probably won’t cut it.
