Penn State report card for Purdue: Lions dominate offense, defense will improve to 9-1

CRIME: A.

Tyler Warren The amazing season continues. Penn State’s top receiver caught all eight of his targets for 127 yards and produced 96 yards after the catch. He also scored on a 48-yard run as a wildcat quarterback, his longest drive of the season. … Drew Allar He was locked in, completing 17 of 19 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Allar also rushed for 22 yards. … Backup quarterback Beau Pribula made the most of his chance, scoring on a 49-yard run in the second half and throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Luke Reynolds. …PSU converted 9 of 14 third-down opportunities.

DEFENSE: B+.

Penn State’s forward running backs Abdul Carter And Dani Dennis-Sutton He was dynamic, combining for four tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry. Dennis-Sutton looked like he did before he got injured at Wisconsin. … Purdue was held to three yards per rush and running back Devin Mockobee was held to 40 yards on 11 carries. … PSU outscored Purdue 17-0 in the third quarter, meaning Tom Allen’s defense still didn’t allow a touchdown in the third quarter.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B.

Placekicker Ryan Barker was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra point attempts. … Punter Riley Thompson averaged 42.5 yards catching on four attempts and had two kicks inside 20 yards. … The Lions used a pair of punt returners – Zion Tracy had a long 13-yard return and Tseer Denmark had a 16-yard return.

COACHING: B+.

The Lions’ offense scored for the first time in a third straight week. … Penn State’s defense did not allow a touchdown until garbage time in the fourth quarter. … Franklin’s team took advantage of a huge gap to scout several young players who could take on bigger roles in 2025.

OVERALL: B+.

Nine wins in 10 games, a defense that has allowed just 16 points in the last two games and a starting quarterback in West Lafayette with just two incompletions. Franklin said the Lions’ 49-10 win over Purdue was their best overall performance of the season. It’s hard to disagree with this. But a lot of teams probably felt that way after the 60th minute against the Boilermakers.
