Are the Jaguars a Good Bet to Avoid a Major Upset?

The Jacksonville Jaguars travel north to face the Detroit Lions, one of the best teams in the National Football League. Jacksonville has struggled this season and it likely won’t be any different on Sunday against the Lions.

Brian Wright of CBS Sports believes that although the Jaguars are legitimate underdogs heading into Detroit, this is the National Football League and even the Jaguars have a chance to win on any given Sunday.

“Losing streak aside, Jacksonville has had success in each of its last four games,” Wright said. “In fact, the Jags lost by single digits five times. A narrow loss to the Minnesota Vikings could have ended differently with a turnover. The Jaguars could probably improve on their defense’s effort by forcing three interceptions and holding Justin Jefferson to just five catches and 48 yards.”

While the Jaguars are unlikely to replicate what the Houston Texans did, they can do their best to disrupt the Lions’ talented offense. The Lions have one of the top scoring teams in the National Football League.

If the Jaguars hope to have trouble on the road this Sunday, they will start by containing the Lions’ offense. Things could get ugly quickly for the Raiders if they let Detroit’s offense get going.

“The Lions’ challenge to take on the Texans could expose some flaws in Detroit and give Jacksonville reason to feel like they can keep it close,” Wright said. “The Jags have talent that could cause problems up front and potentially pressure Goff into making more picks. Travon Walker ranks seventh in the NFL with 7.5 sacks, while Josh Hines-Allen has 5 sacks.”

The Jaguars will be without quarterback Trevor Lawrence. However, there are still some options for players on the offensive end who could be a threat for the Lions.

“Offensively, Tank Bigsby’s injury on Sunday allowed Travis Etienne to receive 68% of the snaps against Minnesota.” wright said. “One of the best-projected running backs of the early season. The talent is finally there to emerge, especially if Bigsby remains on the sidelines. One way would be in the passing game. Etienne caught six passes for 43 yards on October 6 against the Indianapolis Colts.”
