Private ankle monitoring company under scrutiny speaks out against claims from DA’s office

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – FOX10 News is getting answers about a private ankle monitoring company under fire.

The Accupoint company is accused of not bailing out the murder of a mobile man who allegedly committed another murder last week.

Special ankle monitoring system under fire after mobile man allegedly committed murder in exchange for bail

Nyyon Sanders was on probation for a 2022 murder and wore an ankle monitor, according to court documents.

Documents say he let his battery run out before shooting and killing Joseph Evans Jr. at Dauphin Gate Apartments.

Now Accupoint supervisors Jennifer and Bill Vallon tell their side of the story.

Vallon says they have been auditing Accupoint since October 2023 and currently have 63 people in their system.

Jennifer says there is much more to the story than what is being told and says she was heartbroken when she heard the news of the latest murder.

“This is heartbreaking. If I could get her to charge her watch, if I could stop this, if I could come to her house, I would,” Jennifer said emotionally. “I can’t imagine what your family is going through right now.”

Jennifer said she started receiving notifications last Monday that her time was about to expire.

“When it starts to die, we send out multiple alerts that your watch is dying, put it on the charger,” Jennifer explained. “As we approached, critical warnings were heard and began to buzz louder on the clock. We start calling, sending messages. We attempt to contact the individual to notify them that they have committed a violation.

Jennifer says that after they’ve done their best to contact someone who’s committed a violation, they don’t have the authority to decide what happens next.

“Unfortunately, our hands are tied. We can’t go and arrest their guards the moment they die. We tried to ask what we can do, and the only thing we can do is file a report,” he said. “We usually contact the bond company and the district attorney’s office. But we don’t have the authority to go and get them because then we would be charged with kidnapping.”

Jennifer and Bill say they have both made numerous attempts to resolve this issue and even contacted the district attorney’s office.

The Vallons say no one will get back to them or let them know what the proper procedure is.

“I have tried to contact Mr. Blackwood too many times to count and he has yet to meet with us,” Jennifer said. “And now he says it’s our fault? Or is it because we don’t watch? “I mean, it’s his responsibility because he could give us a new protocol at any time.”

FOX10 News reached out to the district attorney’s office Thursday evening to inquire about the contact and received this response: “The DA spoke personally with someone from Accupoint.”

The company also came under scrutiny last month after a Mobile defendant violated the terms of his release by going to a casino in Mississippi.

Jennifer and Bill say they don’t want to see anything like this happen again.

Bill told FOX10 News they will close down if something doesn’t change soon.
