Theni police solve six theft cases by arresting two people

Theni district police have solved six cases of theft and seized 704 grams of gold with the formal arrest of two persons lodged in Coimbatore Central Jail.

The accused were identified as 29-year-old Moorthi from Madurai district and 26-year-old Amsarajan from Periyakulam in Theni district. “We have completely recovered the gold jewelery they stole from all the six houses locked under 2023 and 2024 limits of PC Patti Police Station,” Theni Police Inspector R. Shiva Prasad said.

He said the defendant’s modus operandi was to target locked houses. While the images are captured by closed-circuit television cameras, they will not leave fingerprints and will also mask their faces to hide their identities.

The accused were detained on November 12 and during interrogation, the PC gave information about the hiding place of gold stolen from houses in Patti, five houses in 2023 and one house in 2024. 704 grams of gold were seized.

The police team, together with independent witnesses, took the suspect to a certain place in the district and seized the gold bullion they had buried. “The defendant had turned the gold jewelry into ingots and buried them. All 704 grams of stolen gold were recovered intact. Our entire effort was to achieve 100% recovery and we achieved that,” SP said.

The suspects were sent to the courthouse again on Monday.

The SP said police seized 50 gold coins from the same Moorthi in connection with a similar incident in Tenkarai police station limits earlier this year.

The accused was involved in over 90 cases of theft in various districts. Moorthi had purchased a spinning mill in Rajapalayam for ₹ 4 crore using the proceeds from stolen properties.
