Saafir passed away at the age of 54.

The rapper, whose real name is Reggie Gibson, was a member of the group Golden State Project along with Ras Kass and Xzibit, and Xzibit confirmed his death on social media.

Without revealing the cause of death, he wrote on Instagram on Tuesday (19.11.24) night: “I can’t believe I’m writing this right now but I don’t know what else to do right now. Around 8:45, my brother Reggie, known to the world as Saafir, passed away. So many.” We have a past that I can’t even explain how I feel right now.

“Friends, Family, everyone who is with us from the Hip Hop community, if you can be this solid and reach out to his little brother @chopblack and his son @lilsaafir the family really needs to be supported during this time. That’s all I have right now my soul was crushed.

We love you bro.”,

At the beginning of his career, Saafir lived with the late musician Tupac Shakur and became a dancer at Digital Underground, where he would eventually make some of his first recordings as a rap artist.

He released his debut album ‘Boxcar Sessions’ in 1994, and in later years came ‘Trigonometry’ as well as ‘The Hit List’ and ‘Good Game: The Transition’.

His last album was in the form of an EP titled ‘Fast Lane’, released in 2009.

Away from music, Saafir starred opposite Jada Pinkett Smith in the movie ‘Menace II Society’, which was his big screen debut in 1993.

In 1992, the rapper was on board TWA Flight 843, which crashed shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport, and he suffered a back injury as a result of the incident.

He underwent spinal surgery in later years but suffered complications and eventually ended up in a wheelchair.
