Celebrating 50 years of empowerment through literacy

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Western Michigan University and the Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC) bring together educators, volunteers, teachers, students and community members for a free symposium each year Friday, December 13, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at WMU’s Fetzer Center to celebrate the power of literacy.

The theme of the 2024 Adult Literacy Research and Education Symposium is “50 Years of Empowerment Through Literacy” in honor of KLC’s 50th anniversary. Includes sessions and skill-building workshops for adult learners exploring effective strategies on multigenerational learning, digital skills, goal setting, and more. sign up with Friday, November 22.

In-person attendance is encouraged, but a virtual option will also be available. Refreshments and a boxed lunch will be provided. State Continuing Education Hours can be earned by attending sessions.

KLC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of adults in Kalamazoo County who struggle with reading through programs designed to strengthen basic literacy skills. The agency offers English as a second language education and classes, parent literacy, health literacy, digital skills, job opportunities and basic skills, as well as other services that empower individuals to reach their full potential.
