KETRACO-Adani Deal: Kenyans React After Government Announcements on US Fraud Charges Against Indian Billionaire

Kenya has vowed to pursue its KSh95.68 billion power transmission deal with Adani Energy Solutions even after company owner Gautam Adani was charged with fraud in the US.

Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Opiyo Wandayi said the United States (US) indictment against Adan does not affect the agreement with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO).

Speaking at the National Assembly Energy Committee on Thursday, November 21, Wandayi said the government would continue to speculate with the company.

“The question is, will this report coming out regarding Adani’s alleged corruption affect the delivery of this project? We cannot say that as it is not related to that. So we will engage in speculation,” Wandayi said.

CS Wanadyi added that there were no cases of corruption or bribery based on Adani’s Privately Initiated Offer (PIP).

Adani Group’s Gautam Adani and other suspects were indicted by the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, New York.

Defendants Accused of paying KSh32.4 billion as bribes to Indian officials who expected to make a profit of $2 billion (KSh259.2 billion).

It is alleged that Adani and other defendants kept records of bribes by using ‘code names’ in their communications.
