Bengali film about social welfare project for girls will finally release on Friday – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Kolkata, Nov 21 (PTI) Three months after the tragic rape-murder incident at RG Kar hospital, which led to widespread protests and a temporary halt to film screenings in West Bengal, a Bengali film highlighting the benefits of chief minister-sponsored girl student empowerment projects like Kanyashree has been released from its original release date It will hit the screens on Friday, 81 days later.

‘Sukanya’, which was initially scheduled to release on August 30, was postponed due to the ongoing unrest in the city and other parts of the state.

The RG Kar incident on 9 August triggered great sadness and protest, and with the public mood being one of mourning rather than celebration, many felt it was not the right time to visit the theatres.

Director Ujjwal Mitra spoke to PTI about the decision to postpone the release of the film. “Together with other filmmakers, we decided to postpone our release schedules in the August-September period. The protests and general sadness in the city made it clear that people were not in the mood to watch movies. We are also very saddened by the terrible incident. “At that time, commercial success was secondary,” he said.

With the situation slowly returning to normal and the festival season bringing audiences back to theatres, Mitra and the team decided to continue releasing the film.

“As the mood changed, people started returning to movie theaters and theaters. “That’s when we decided to start the release process,” he added.

When asked if the success of films like ‘Bohurupi’ influenced this decision, Mitra said box office trends show that audiences are willing to return to theaters if the content suits them.

Highlighting the impact of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Kanyashree scheme for the empowerment of girl students, ‘Sukanya’ revolves around the character of Maya Chattopadhyay.

The fictional Maya rises from opposition leader to Prime Minister by implementing social welfare projects aimed at empowering young girls.

One such project changes a girl’s life, leading her to become an IPS officer. “The film is about women’s education and women’s empowerment,” Mitra said.

“Don’t every girl want to be ‘Sukanya’ (good girl)?” he asked.

Mitra also revealed that the film was inspired by the Kanyashree project and similar projects launched by other states.

Additionally, the narrative also touches upon farmers’ protests against land acquisition for an electric bike manufacturing unit and references the Singur agitation of 2006-07 during the Left Front government, which played a crucial role in Mamata Banerjee’s rise to power.

In the movie, former TMC MP and doctor Dr. While Santanu Sen stars in the role of DGP, West Bengal Animal Resources Development Minister Swapan Debnath plays an important political figure.

Mitra shared that Santanuda has been a regular stage actor since childhood, making him an ideal choice for the role. Other notable actors include Kharaj Mukherjee and Koneenica Banerjee. PTI SUS MNB
