New York DMV offers free replacement for stripped license plates

New York drivers dealing with stripped license plates can now get a new plate from the DMV for free; but only if they are willing to accept a new license plate number.

To request a free replacement, drivers must email the DMV: (email protected) Current plate numbers should be written in the subject line and the name, address, phone number, stripped plate number and photo of the damaged plates should be included. A new registration tag will be provided with the replacement.

Drivers who want to keep their current license plate number can do so for a fee of $20. Note that plates that are worn, broken, or have cracks due to wear and tear are not suitable for replacement.
