Houston Katy Highway crash: Woman and girl killed; TxDOT employee and passenger injured

A woman and child were killed in a violent three-vehicle crash on the I-10 Katy Freeway in Houston Friday morning. Two more people were injured, including a TxDOT employee.

The crash occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in the westbound lane between Washington Boulevard and I-610. Motorists should expect the highway to be closed for several hours.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police said the woman and the girl were in a stationary vehicle on the right side of the highway when another car hit them.

Police said TxDOT was working in the area and one of their trucks was also hit. All three vehicles caught fire. A TxDOT employee was standing outside the truck and received some burns.

The woman, estimated to be in her 40s, and the girl, said to be 8 to 10 years old, lost their lives.

The TxDOT employee and a passenger in the crashed vehicle were taken to the hospital, police said. Their latest condition was reported to be stable.

Police said the driver of the striking vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperative. It will be investigated whether the driver is disabled or not.
