Burnaby News: Young man arrested over ‘disturbing’ sexual notes he left for women

A young man was arrested after BCMP reported receiving “disturbing” sexual messages — or in some cases, underwear — from multiple women in the same Burnaby district in recent months, RCMP said Thursday.

Eight of the worrying discoveries were reported between September 15 and November 3, all near Telford Avenue and Beresford Street, a busy area next to Metropolis at the Metrotown shopping centre.

Burnaby RCMP told CTV News some items were left in the victims’ cars.

The notes “express thoughts of a sexual nature” and “insinuate that the suspect was stalking the victims,” the detachment said in a press release.

“I can only imagine the unsettling feeling these women must have felt when they knew someone was watching them,” said Sgt. Freda Fong is in the release.

“It was important for us to identify and arrest the individual as soon as possible. We need to send a strong message to the community that this type of behavior will not be tolerated and that the police prioritize the safety of women.”

Police officers detained a 20-year-old suspect on November 6 for alleged criminal harassment, but he was later released.

Authorities said the young man was subject to several strict conditions, including that he not have any contact with the victims or visit any places they were known to have been to.

Burnaby RCMP say two women have come forward but there may be other women. The detachment urged anyone facing criminal harassment to contact authorities.

Examples of criminal harassment can include repeated phone calls, threatening voicemails, persistent electronic messages, stalking someone, sending them unwanted gifts and other behavior, the detachment said.
