RG Kar tragedy: Former SHO of Tala PS moves Kolkata HC for bail

Kolkata, November 26 (IANS): Former SHO of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal, who is currently in judicial custody in connection with the gruesome rape and murder of a resident doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August, approached the Kolkata High Court for bail on Tuesday.

The matter will be heard by the division bench of Justice Arijit Bandopadhyay and Justice Apurba Sinha Roy on any day this week.

Mondal and RG Kar’s former, controversial Director Sandip Ghosh have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the rape and murder tragedy. RG Kar falls under the jurisdiction of Tala Police Station.

The main charges against both are misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence; The initial investigation into the matter was being conducted by the Calcutta Police before the charge of investigation was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.

Following his arrest, Mondal was suspended from office by the state government as per the protocol which provides for the suspension of any government official and staff who remains in custody for 48 hours or more for a criminal offence.

Earlier, Mondal had also applied for bail in a special court in Kolkata, but the CBI had opposed it. The CBI lawyer informed the court that on the morning of August 9, when the victim’s body was removed from the seminar hall inside the RG Kar building, some mysterious conversations took place on the search list of Mondal’s mobile number.

The CBI has already filed the first chargesheet in the case, in which they described civil volunteer Sanjay Roy as the “sole prime accused” in the rape and murder crime. Now the central agency’s detectives are trying to uncover the “bigger conspiracy picture” behind the crime.

In such a situation, the incident of Mondal approaching the Calcutta High Court seeking bail became extremely important; because there were already criticisms from different circles about the progress of the investigation carried out by the central organization.
