Public opinion divided over Malaysia’s anti-corruption efforts after 1MDB-related charges against Najib are dropped

The decision casts doubt on the government’s anti-corruption efforts and reflects concerns arising from the similar sacking of DPM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi nearly a year ago

(KUALA LUMPUR) A decision by the Malaysian Supreme Court on Wednesday (November 27) to release a former senior treasury official, which did not amount to an acquittal (DNAA), in the case involving former prime minister Najib Razak and the high-profile 1MDB, has reignited public debate on the country’s determination to fight corruption.

While some Malaysians think the decision is justified, others question the attorney general’s competence and the government’s commitment to pursuing high-profile corruption cases.

According to news reports, Judge Muhammad Jamil Hussin attributed the decision to serious delays in the trial and the failure of the prosecution to fully present documents.
