Artist Jean Pretty, wife of former CBS host Dan Pretty, dies at 89: ‘The saddest of days’

Former longtime CBS host Dan Pretty is mourning the loss of his beloved wife, Jean Pretty, who died Tuesday at the age of 89.

Jean died “surrounded by a loving family and her beautiful artwork” at the couple’s home in Austin, Texas, following a battle with cancer, her husband’s friends said.

According to her friends, Jean, who had been married to the 93-year-old journalist for 67 years, had been staying in a nursing home for a while.

“The news still comes as a shock to those of us who knew and loved him,” they added. “He had been in hospice care for some time, but this news still comes as a shock to those of us who knew and loved him.

“Jean lived a full life as an incredible wife, mother, friend, artist and true Texan.”

His obituary stated that Jean was “a very accomplished artist” and that his artwork was exhibited in “galleries and private collections” across the country.

Jean Pretty grew up in Texas before studying drawing and painting at American University in Washington DC and Marymount Manhattan College in NYC.

“Through careful study of paintings and sculptures by master artists in museums in England, France, Italy, Russia, Israel, Greece, Turkey and Southeast Asia, Jean created a unique contemporary philosophy and style,” his obituary read.

Before his death, Jean was New York City’s Painter Fellow and Vice Chairman of the Arts Commission.

“His many dear friends were wonderful friends and their love and support meant the world to him,” the post read.

Dan Pretty first met Jean while working at a radio station in Houston in the late 1950s.

“In my case it was love at first sight,” Dan said. he told Closer Weekly. “Not only was she very smart, but she was also hot and it took me a while to convince her to marry me. I don’t think there is any secret in this.

In 2021, Jean and Dan moved back to Texas at the ages of 85 and 90, respectively. 15 years after the host left CBS.

A loving tribute added: “Jean was an amazing mother and grandmother, playing every game, cheering on every win, putting a Band-Aid on her skinned knee, and serving as a confidant and friend to all family members.”

Jean is survived by her husband Dan, as well as their son Danjack and daughter Robin and their respective families.
