Midtown beer store 8 Degrees Plato will close at the end of 2024

8 Degrees Plato beer shop and bar, the Midtown store that has been serving craft beer in bottles, cans and on tap for nearly a decade, will close at the end of December.

Owners Tim Costello and Brigid Beaubien announced the impending closure on Facebook this week, citing their desire to retire from the beer business.

“As rewarding as owning and operating the Detroit store has been, it is time for us to move on with our lives. Brigid and I still have many things we want to accomplish,” he says in a statement on social media. “We had a purchase agreement to sell the store but unfortunately it recently fell through, so we need to shift our focus away from the store at this time.”

8 Degrees Plato, located at 3409 Cass near Peterboro in Detroit, opened in September 2015 as the second location for Costello and Beaubien, who opened the original 8 Degrees Plato on W. Nine Mile in Ferndale in 2011 and closed it in 2018.

The store, which has 16 taps and a wide selection of craft beers from around the world, as well as mead and ciders, will remain in operation through the end of December with some special events planned. Customers will gather for a chili dinner on December 8th, and a big last chance party will be held on December 28th, the last Saturday of the year. Christmas Eve, December 6, is also a good time to visit, when thousands of people draw to Midtown’s shops, restaurants, bars and museums.

The closure of 8 Degrees Plato follows several other high-profile closures of craft beer-related businesses. St. Jamex Brewing in St. Clair Shores closed in August, and Ascension Brewing Company in Novi closed in October. Last month, Arctic Circle Brewing in Chesterfield Township also announced it would close before the end of 2024.
