Lions coach Dan Campbell looks set to cast a shadow over the NFL after Jameson Williams was fined for his touchdown celebration

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell threw shade at the NFL in a press conference this week, pointing out the apparent hypocrisy of the league’s rules regarding touchdown celebrations.

The NFL has seen a sharp decline in celebrations overall this season, with many players leaving the team as well. He was fined for violent acts or finger gun celebrations during games.

Obscene gestures during touchdown celebrations are another sore point for the league, and Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was one of the most recent examples.

Lions’ Week 11 match Jacksonville Jaguars, Williams scored a touchdown early in the third quarter to give Detroit a 35-6 lead. Williams raced toward the goal line and then fell backwards into the end zone, catching his groin as he confronted the Jags’ linebacker; It was a tribute to Marshawn Lynch.

Williams was reportedly fined $19,697 for making an obscene gesture, but that didn’t stop the league from using his goal celebration on its social media pages.

At a press conference on Monday, Campbell was asked about his thoughts on his team’s creative celebrations this year. Neither the reporter nor Campbell mentioned Williams’ name, but the coach’s comments appeared to refer to Williams’ goal.

“Well, it depends on whether the league allows it, right? They’ll use whatever they need, the content, but…

LIONS’ JAMESON WILLIAMS WAS CONSIDERED BY POLICE FOR CARRYING A GUN IN THE CAR JUST 2 WEEKS BEFORE PAD WAS REMOVED

“I don’t really get caught up in it. I tell our guys, ‘Hey, you won’t cost us 15,'” he continued. “I’m good with whatever they do. So they’re having fun, they’re creative, they like to push the boundaries no matter what. I know our guys have fun with it and I think that’s important. They enjoy it, so it’s all good.”

Williams also deals with issues off the field. In October, Williams was involved in a traffic accident in the car driven by his brother. A gun registered to Williams was found in the car, but he did not have a concealed carry permit. But his brother did it.

Williams was not arrested, and prosecutors in Michigan announced this week that he would not face charges.

He also provided a service two match suspension this season for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. This follows a four-game suspension last season for violating the league’s gambling policy.

When asked Tuesday about the situation and Williams’ repeated offenses around the league, Campbell said he believes Williams has learned from his mistakes.

“I think so. I think you don’t want these things to come up every time they come up, but I think he’s learned and grown from them, and so have I.”
