Women in Andhra Pradesh are flocking to post offices in large numbers. Although there are various reasons behind this urgency, let’s understand the situation.

In Andhra Pradesh, various allegations are doing the rounds that the state government has advised unbanked women to at least open an account at post offices. It is claimed that this will enable them to benefit from government welfare schemes.

It was also claimed that those who had difficulty linking Aadhaar to their bank accounts were advised to open post office accounts to access these schemes. That’s why women flock to post offices to open accounts.

It was also claimed that those who have existing post office accounts should link them with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This has led to a queue of women wanting to make this connection in Andhra Pradesh post offices. They first verify the active status of their accounts and then go to NPCI offices.

Reports have also emerged that as part of the Super Six Scheme, the Andhra Pradesh government has promised to provide Rs 1,500 per month to women aged 18 to 59. The expectation of this promise being fulfilled led many women to flock to post offices.

However, it should be noted that the government has not issued such a directive. The government has no authority to open a post office account for those who do not have a bank account. This misinformation spread by some officials caused unnecessary panic and inconvenience, often forcing women to queue at post offices from morning until night. Some even pay Rs 200 to speed up account openings.

Moreover, the Andhra Pradesh government is facing a serious financial crisis. The much talked about free bus scheme, which was due to start on August 15, remains on hold due to lack of funds.

Additionally, the government is obliged to distribute Rs. 20,000 to farmers and Rs. 15,000 to each student within the scope of the mother’s greeting program until March 31. Because there are insufficient funds to meet these existing commitments, the likelihood of new programs being implemented is extremely low.

Although it is useful to have a post office account, there is no urgent need to open one. The government deposits benefits from existing programs directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts. For this reason, government sources urge the public not to listen to such false propaganda.
