Lucknow MLA writes to Gadkari and seeks high road to end snarls at DND Flyway in Noida

In a bid to end severe traffic congestion in the stretch from Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) Bypass Road to Mahamaya flyover at Noida, Sarojini Nagar (Lucknow district) MLA, Dr Rajeshwar Singh has written to Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Yogi Adityanath wants the construction of an elevated road connecting the DND Causeway to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.

“I am getting the matter examined to take action,” Gadkari said in response to Singh’s letter.

The stretch from DND Causeway to Mahamaya Flyover faces frequent snarls as the eight-lane road (bypass) suddenly narrows to four lanes and traffic at this point splits into three different directions.

Road experts believe that an elevated road is the only option to relieve congestion in this area as the vehicle population is increasing with each passing year.

“Higher roads will be needed in the future to decongest the area and solve the traffic congestion problem on DND Flyway,” said Dr S Velmurugan, director of traffic engineering and safety and chief scientist (HOD) at Central Road Research Institute.

MLA Singh, who is also the wife of Gautam Budh Nagar police commissioner Laxmi Singh, said in her letter that the congestion was causing extreme hardship for daily commuters.

“Since 2001, when DND Bypass was opened to public, the population has increased many times and spread to Greater Noida as well. Due to the increase in traffic, the loop road from DND Pass connecting Noida and Greater Noida (towards Mahamaya flyover) is causing extreme difficulties for daily commuters. This is the junction where traffic from Mayur Vihar side proceeds towards Noida and Greater Noida. In his letter, Singh said that traffic from Noida to Greater Noida also merges here, causing congestion.

According to Noida traffic police, commuters usually spend around 40 to 50 minutes a day to cover the 5-km stretch. They said this was because the DND loop was built to support a traffic load of about 80,000 vehicles, but now supports more than 300,000 vehicles every day.

“Greater Noida is a growing business and industrial hub in the National Capital Region (NCR) and it is in the interest of the nation to facilitate vehicular movement in the region and attract investors and industrialists to open their facilities. Therefore, there is an urgent need to construct an elevated road connecting DND Causeway with Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. This will provide separate transit for passengers bound for Noida and Greater Noida,” the letter reads.

“There is a need for an elevated road from DND Flyway to Mahamaya flyover because once Jewar airport opens (by April 2025), the situation in the DND loop in Noida will worsen,” said a senior traffic police officer, requesting anonymity.

According to traffic police, an elevated road is being constructed from Chilla border to Mahamaya flyover and its cost is around $1.5 million. 937 crore.

Uttar Pradesh government undersecretary Abhay Pratap Shrivastava also directed the state public works department to take necessary action in the matter.
