Australia: 11-year-old boy killed and four seriously injured after car crashes into school fence | World News

A child died and several people were injured when a car crashed into a primary school in Australia, police said.

The car went off the road in the suburb of Hawthorn East. Melbourneand crashed over the fence into an outdoor table where five children were sitting just after 14.30 local time.

The 11-year-old boy, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, later died.

Victoria Police said two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the car, a 40-year-old woman, crashed into the fence while making a U-turn after picking up the child from school.

He was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody.

The child, who was a passenger in the vehicle, escaped without injury.

Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy, of the Major Collision Investigation Unit, said: “It appears to have been a tragic accident.”

Video footage taken from the scene shows damage to the left front side of the car.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
