Violence in Haiti changes how CT programs can help

NORWAY, Conn. (WFSB) – Violence changed the way Connecticut programs working in Haiti helped.

The Haitian Health Foundation operates six clinics in Haiti.

There has been an increase in demand due to the recent violence in the country. On Monday, Haiti’s international airport was closed after gangs opened fire on a commercial plane landing in Port-Au-Prince.

“They have difficulties accessing the things that you and I have accepted,” said Nadesha Mijoba, Country Director of the Haitian Health Foundation.

Mijoba is the country director of the Haiti Health Foundation. He hasn’t been to Haiti in months because of the violence, but there are boats on the ground helping.

Queues at health clinics are long. Closures of roads and airports make it difficult to transport supplies.

“From a medical standpoint to Jeremie from Port Au Prince, in terms of milk for our little kids on the feeding programme. It’s the little things we trust!” Mijoba said.

“This is a really bad situation,” said Louis Elneus of Lumiere de Demain in Haiti.

Elneus has an organization that helps children in Haiti.

“This is truly heartbreaking. The misery, the level of violence and mostly the children. Those who commit this violence are gangs,” Elneus said.

“While we have fewer supplies and fewer medications, there is more demand for services. As you can imagine, the math is implausible,” Mijoba added.

The Haitian Health Foundation has managed to keep the clinics running. Their clinic is further south from where most of the violence is happening.

Many Americans don’t volunteer and can’t go anymore with the international airport closing. The Haitian Health Foundation is relying on the bots already on the ground to stay and assist while it creates more permanent solutions.

“Funding given to food or healthcare will be used efficiently and will help save many lives,” said Marilyn Lowney, Executive Director of the Haitian Health Foundation.
