Authorities said officers arrived at a home in Dickinson in response to a shooting.

An officer located a man, later identified as Sutton, suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck.

According to the statement, Sutton’s high school sweetheart immediately identified the attacker as Jaron Morgan, Sutton’s childhood best friend.

Officials said Morgan fled the scene with his girlfriend, McKenzie Colonna-McBrayer.

Authorities also said they received a call from a witness who saw the shooting and followed the vehicle Morgan was driving, describing the location of items thrown from the vehicle.

Authorities stated that these vehicles were seized by K-9s and gloves, a hoodie and the gun used in the murder were found.

Galveston County Sheriff’s Deputies quickly arrested Morgan and Colonna-McBrayer.

Morgan told officers he went to the scene to fight with his best friend and stole the victim’s $40 and was “disrespectful,” the statement said.

Officers later discovered the two had been together the night before and Sutton left after Morgan accused her of stealing $40 from his wallet.

It was later determined that Morgan called Sutton before arriving at Sutton and his girlfriend’s home.

After a brief fight, authorities said Morgan shot Sutton in his own driveway.

During the trial, authorities said Morgan’s girlfriend, Colonna-McBrayer, was called to the stand but refused to testify and was held in contempt by Judge Jeth Jones.

The jury deliberated for an hour and a half before deciding on a 27-year sentence.
