Oklahoma State Could Have One of the Best Scoring Seasons in School History

Oklahoma State’s offense appears to be trouble-free under the new coach, but it could be among the best in school history.

After seven seasons with Mike Boynton at the helm, OSU went in a new direction and hired Western Kentucky coach Steve Lutz. Known for his up-tempo lineups, Lutz’s style of play translated into Stillwater over the first few weeks.

The Cowboys are up 3-0, consistently winning the turnover battle and getting out in transition. OSU, which scores at least 80 points in every game, looks like a potential surprise team in the Big 12.

Through the first three games, OSU averaged 84.7 points per game. That average is unheard of in Stillwater after the last few seasons. For reference, OSU reached 85 points just five times last season; This year it reached twice.

Although scoring averages are nearly impossible to maintain once Big 12 play begins, the Cowboys currently have the second-highest points per game in school history. Their 84.7 points fall short of Brad Underwood’s 85.7 points per game in his lone season in 2016-17. This team entered the NCAA Tournament as a 10th seed before losing in the first round.

Over the last two seasons, Lutz’s teams at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Western Kentucky averaged 80 points per game. This feat has only been accomplished seven times in OSU history.

While 80-plus points per game in previous seasons doesn’t always translate into an NCAA Tournament appearance, it’s at least a more entertaining brand of basketball than last season’s 71 points per game.

If the Cowboys can continue to overcome their offensive woes and put up big points in non-conference games, they will have a legitimate shot at breaking into the top 10 in points per game in OSU history. There are still months left in the season and a lot can change, but the OSU offense is off to a promising start.
