Upper Peninsula man to face trial for alleged sexual assault of teenagers

A Dickinson County man accused of sexually assaulting two teenagers will stand trial for the alleged attacks.

Trentin McWilliams, 23, is set to stand trial Friday in the 41st District Court in Dickinson County for the alleged assaults in 2018 and 2022, the Michigan Attorney General’s Office said in a press release.

According to the statement, a preliminary hearing date has not yet been set.

His attorney, Samuel Bennett, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

US Marshals Service returned McWilliams, from Norway and more recently California, traveled to Dickinson County in September. He was arraigned Sept. 20 on seven felony charges.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office charged him in July with criminal sexual conduct against a child under the age of 13 or related to him, according to online court records.

McWilliams allegedly sexually assaulted the child at a relative’s home in 2018.

The Dickinson County District Attorney’s Office charged him with five additional counts in February for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a car in October 2022, authorities said.

Authorities extradited McWilliams with funding from Operation Survivor Justice. OSJ is a partnership between the state Attorney General’s Office, local district attorneys, and the U.S. Marshals Service to find and return people with outstanding sexual assault warrants to Michigan.

“Operation Survivor Justice is already having a profound impact in Michigan and across the country,” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. “Through our partnership with the U.S. Marshals Service, we have successfully ensured that numerous individuals accused of sexual assault face justice in court.”

This is the latest development in a series of unrelated criminal sexual conduct cases across the state.
