‘Moana 2’ directors took inspiration from their own families when creating Moana’s new little sister, Simea

The fascinating world of Disney’s “Moana” captivated audiences with its stunning animation, unforgettable music and intimate narrative rooted in Polynesian culture.

As excitement builds for the anticipated sequel, “Moana 2,” fans can’t wait to see how the beloved characters will develop, especially Moana and her new little sister Simea.

This adorable sibling bond is inspired by the real-life dynamics between director David Derrick Jr.’s children, born 14 years apart.

“There was a tough moment where he had to go to college,” Derrick told On The Red Carpet. “And suddenly she realized that this pillar of joy in her life had suddenly moved away from her. And she grabbed him by the arm and said: ‘When will you ever stay with me again?’ “It was heartbreaking as a parent, but it’s also one of those things where you know there are beautiful moments of growth throughout your life.”

The directors aim to explore this theme of growth in Moana and allow her character to develop significantly from the first film.

“I think the sibling relationship is a really meaningful thing,” director Jason Hand added, hinting at deeper narrative layers in the film. “But it’s actually much more than that.”

Music has always been a cornerstone of the Moana narrative, and fans can’t wait to know what musical gems await them in the sequel.

David scoffed, “Actually, we have a few.”

Director Dana Ledoux Miller joked, “They came to us and said, ‘All we hear is the Moana 1 soundtrack!’ We have many parents who say – get ready!”

Ledoux Miller assured that the music will be as iconic as those in the original film: “We were not going to shrink in the 2nd movie.”

While talking about the important moments that await us in the film, Dana hinted at an intense moment in Act 3:

“You’re not ready for Act 3. Moana goes into an incredible storm, and it’s at this point that she’s truly tested and forced to make choices that will have real consequences in her life and the lives of others, and it changes Maui forever!”

“Moana 2” will be released in theaters only on November 27.
