Icy roads were a factor in the 19-vehicle crash that killed a Manitoba man: RCMP

Police have launched an investigation into a fatal crash involving 19 vehicles on a Manitoba highway.

Selkirk RCMP said they were called to the accident around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning on the bridge over Highway 59, just south of Springhill Winter Sports Park.

Mounties said their initial investigation found that a southbound vehicle lost control on the bridge, causing a chain reaction collision involving 19 vehicles.

Police teams arrived at the scene and began redirecting traffic to prevent further accidents.

Firefighters and crews from the surrounding area came to the scene and helped the slightly injured drivers.

A 55-year-old man from Tyndall, Man. He was found dead at the scene.

Police think icy roads were a factor in the accident.

RCMP are asking anyone who was traveling in the north or southbound lanes of Highway 59 between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and may have dashcam footage to contact the detachment.

An investigation is ongoing.
