Tourist killed after boardwalk breaks in popular Taiwan attraction Alishan

A tourist was killed and four others were injured when a 3-meter-high boardwalk suddenly broke in Taiwan’s mountain attraction Alishan on the afternoon of November 13.

The incident occurred around 16:00 near the Fumei Suspension Bridge in Shanmei Village. Chiayi District Fire Bureau.

A 76-year-old woman named Liow died due to a head injury she received during a fall. It was stated that the other four tourists, aged between 54 and 84, had bruises and fractures on their bodies, but their condition is currently stable.

The five tourists were part of a larger local tour group of 44 people from Miaoli County in central Taiwan who were visiting Alishan County when the incident occurred, Focus Taiwan reported.

In photos released by the Fire Marshal’s Office, the floor of the boardwalk appears to be broken at one end. A metal ladder is placed horizontally over the gap.

Taiwan authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident.

According to statistics from the Taiwan Tourism Administration, Alishan National Scenic Area became the sixth most visited tourist attraction in Chiayi, southwestern Taiwan, in the first half of 2024, with more than 470,000 visitors.
