Palo Verde High School volunteer coach arrested for sexually assaulting a minor

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A volunteer coach at Palo Verde High School was arrested Thursday on charges of inappropriate contact with a minor.

Michael Atwell, 71, was arrested for sexual assault of a child under the age of 14, according to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.

High school principal Lisa Schumacher released a statement saying keeping students and staff safe is her number one priority.

He said the charges were not related to their roles at the school. Atwell has been terminated and will not be allowed on campus.

We want to assure you that we will fully cooperate with law enforcement in their investigation. Please note that this is an LVMPD investigation and as school officials we have no additional information to share.
