Schools in Manipur will reopen a week later from November 25

The Manipur government, which closed schools for almost a week due to widespread protests and curfew, announced that classes will resume in all schools in the state from November 25 (Monday).

A government order issued by Directorate of Education (Schools) director L Nandakumar on Sunday said: “Regular classes will resume for all schools of the state government, government-aided, private and central schools from 25 November 2024 (Monday) onwards.”

“All regional education officers under education department (schools) in Manipur are directed to inform all concerned under their jurisdiction and take necessary action accordingly,” the order said.

The closure of schools in the state came into effect following a government order issued by the Directorate of Education (Schools) on November 17, 2024, after the state witnessed widespread protests and imposition of curfew in five districts of Imphal West, Imphal East. Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal, 11 cases involving the recovery of bodies of six civilians (three women and three children) who were found missing after ten armed militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in November.

On the other hand, Manipur authorities relaxed the curfew from 5 am to 12 noon in all areas of Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Kakching and Thoubal districts on Sunday and residents in these areas went out to buy essential items.

It may be noted that the state home department has extended the suspension of mobile internet services in nine districts (Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam and Pherzawl) for another two days till November 25, 2024.
