22 ‘Kayayies’ Graduates as Professional Bus Drivers Under Bawumia’s Empowerment Program | General News

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia gave certificates to 22 female chief porters who graduated from bus driving.

The porters, popularly known as Kayayei, are Dr. Under the Kayayei Empowerment Program initiated by Bawumia, he provided training to a total of 5000 Kayayei, among other modules such as bead making, fashion design, soap making.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of qualified drivers in Accra on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia expressed his satisfaction with the transformation of young girls from Kayayei into professional drivers.

“Today is a happy day for 22 young ladies who used to be Kayayei but today are professional Aayalolo riders. I am happy for their transformation and happy to officially accept them and give them their certificates”said Dr. Bawumia.

The Vice President added that the Kayayeis found themselves at a disadvantage, while some people gave them head pans to continue carrying loads. “We thought of a bold solution for them”.

“We were very worried and thought about what we could do to help them… Some people were giving them head pans to continue what they were doing. We came up with bold solutions to convert them. The Kayayei have a lot of intelligence, like everyone else.”

Dr. fulfilled his promise to build a hostel for the Kayayeis and provide them with education. Bawumia explained: “One day, on a trip to Agbogbloshie, I told them that I would build them a hostel to help convert them. Many people doubted it and said it was not possible, but I said it was possible.”

Charles Annan, General Manager of Greater Accra Private Transport Executives (GAPTE), under whose tutelage the girls trained, also praised Dr. Charles Annan for giving them the opportunity to transform the lives of the Kayayeis. He expressed his gratitude to Bawumia.

“You gave us the task of training Kayayeis to drive buses and we fulfilled it. And today we are here to show you the ladies to whom you gave this opportunity… This program started about 5 months ago when you launched the Kayayei Empowerment Program. about 5 months ago… Today we are no longer Kayayei “We have 22 young women who have transitioned to qualified driving.”remarked Charles Annan.

He announced that the ladies will be employed by Aayalolo Bus Service with immediate effect and their salaries will be paid along with their social security.

The graduates were extremely happy and Dr. They were grateful to Bawumia for the “life-changing” opportunity he gave them.
