Nashville rape suspect identified by fingerprint left on canister

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 33-year-old man was arrested Wednesday following multiple attacks on women in Nashville.

Metro police say on Aug. 21, a woman called 911 for help after a man attacked her outside an apartment complex in East Nashville. She told detectives the man grabbed her from behind and said, “you’re going to walk with me to my destination.”

The victim tried to push the man, but the man reportedly punched him in the face with a closed fist. He continued to fight until the man, who was later identified. Deshawn Shurickescaped.

Detectives used surveillance footage to identify Shurick as a suspect after he was seen leaving a building in an apartment complex across the street from the victim’s home, according to court documents. The victim was able to identify Shurick as the attacker in the photo lineup.

Officers were called to TriStar Skyline Medical Center on Oct. 22 to interview a woman who was critically injured during an attempted rape.

The victim told officers he was in East Park on Woodland Avenue when Shurick approached him and asked for a high-five. According to court documents, Shurick began punching and kicking the victim as he screamed for help.

According to court documents, Shurick stripped the victim of his clothes and attacked him. The victim noticed he left a “Clubtails Margarita” box behind as he ran away.

Detectives were able to obtain a fingerprint from the canister that matched Shurick’s fingerprints and later used city security camera footage to determine that he was in the parking lot before and after the attack in which the canister was used.

Shurick was booked into the Metro jail and charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, strangulation, kidnapping and rape. His bond was set at $192,000.

Shurick was named Metro’s Most Wanted list last week.
